How It All Began

My name is Gary Hickey and I have been cutting things for more than 40 years.

Growing up, my friends and I always had pocket knives and used them all the time. I quickly realized that a dull knife is like having no knife at all. It wasn’t enough to just HAVE a knife, it had to be kept clean and sharp and ready to use when needed. So, I ‘borrowed’ a knife from my Mother’s kitchen and asked my Grandfather to teach me how to sharpen it. And, my fascination with keeping things sharp began.

My early days were spent as a hair stylist, where none of the cheap scissors i could afford were really sharp enough to cut hair with any precision. Wanting to excel at my craft, I knew I had to use the best tools. I then met a guy who traveled around the country selling high end shears, and maintained and sharpened everyone’s equipment. Being unable to afford professional shears as a stylist, I kept sharpening and maintaining the one pair that I had. He was receptive to giving me sharpening tips for my many poor attempts. Seeing the success I was having, I was soon sharpening shears for my friends who were young stylists.

I refined my craft, my sharpening friend stopped coming around. For years I sharpened my own equipment and broadened my skills to include my own chefs knives.

When COVID hit, I was giving tips to friends in the maintenance and upkeep of their tools. After researching and outreach to my colleagues, I realized that this is sadly a lost art. I decided to pivot after selling my business. I wanted to offer a quality service of sharpening, so I began once again to do my own sharpening.

I am now in the business of sharpening full time and am hoping to share my understanding and experience of the importance of using a sharpened tool for all of our personal and professional tasks.

The Success of my business relies on your satisfaction
